HS Code, ITC-HS, CN and HTS: What's the Difference?

The Harmonized System (HS) is the World Customs Organization's product classification, used by more than 200 countries. The first 6 digits are the same everywhere. Each country then adds its own digits: India uses 8-digit ITC-HS codes for exports and imports, the EU uses 8-digit CN codes (10-digit TARIC for duties), and the USA uses 10-digit HTS codes. So cumin is 0909.31 everywhere, 0909 31 29 on an Indian shipping bill, and has its own longer code in the importing country.

  • De-oiled rice bran: exports free again since 3 October 2025 (DGFT Notification 37/2025-26), after the ban of July 2023.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What is the difference between an HS code and an ITC-HS code?

The HS code is the 6-digit international code shared by all countries. ITC-HS is India's 8-digit version, which adds two digits for more detail and is used on Indian shipping bills and in export policy.

How do I find the HS code for my product?

Search the product name in the finder above, or look it up in your country's official tariff (for India: CBIC Customs Tariff, ICEGATE or DGFT ITC-HS). The importing country's customs decides the final code.

Is the HS code the same in every country?

Only the first 6 digits. Countries add their own digits, so the full code for the same product differs between India, the EU and the USA.

What is the HS code for cumin seeds?

Whole cumin seeds are HS 0909.31; in India, cumin (other than black) whole is exported under ITC-HS 0909 31 29. Ground cumin is 0909.32.

What is the HS code for sesame seeds?

Sesame seeds are HS 1207.40; natural, hulled and black sesame are exported from India under ITC-HS 1207 40 90.

What is the HS code for groundnuts (peanuts)?

Shelled groundnut kernels are HS 1202.42 (India 1202 42 10 for HPS kernels) and in-shell groundnuts 1202.41. Roasted peanuts and peanut butter are 2008.11.

Are roasted peanuts and roasted chickpeas classified differently from raw?

Yes. Roasting moves them from Chapter 12 (peanuts) or 07 (chickpeas) to heading 2008 (prepared fruits and nuts): 2008 11 for roasted peanuts and 2008 19 for roasted chickpeas.

Is export of wheat and de-oiled rice bran allowed from India?

Yes. Wheat and wheat flour became free to export on 24 August 2026, and de-oiled rice bran on 3 October 2025, according to DGFT notifications. Check the current DGFT status before you contract.
