PPIS, FCS and Kosher: What Sesame Needs in Israel
Sesame is a plant product, so two authorities are involved: Plant Protection and Inspection Services (PPIS) for plant health, and the National Food Control Service (FCS) for food imports. Israel has reformed its food import rules in recent years, so check current rules with your customs agent.
- You apply for a PPIS import permit for each shipment. Send us the permit conditions before packing, and the phytosanitary certificate from India is worded to match.
- You must be registered with FCS and register the product. The Certificate of Analysis supports the test results that registration asks for. See lab testing.
- Bulk bags for further processing are outside the Hebrew labelling standard SI 1145, but still carry normal shipping marks.
- Kosher supervision is not a legal import requirement for plant products, but most supermarkets and hotels expect it.
- No India-Israel trade agreement is in force, so standard (MFN) duty applies.
