Iraqi importers and wholesale traders buy chickpeas and lentils from India in volume: India shipped about US$11.8 million of dried pulses to Iraq in 2025. Import Rules for Pulses in Iraq
The Ministry of Agriculture controls grain and plant products in Iraq, and COSQC samples food at the border. Much published guidance on dates and shelf life is from 2011, so confirm each point below with your clearing agent.
- Import licence: published guidance gives a validity of 90 days, extendable by 30. Share your licence dates so loading fits inside them.
- Dating: dry pulses were listed among products that need only a packing date. The date is printed or embossed on the bag, not on a removable tag.
- Shelf life: goods past half their shelf life can be refused when the shelf life is longer than one year. Shorter-life goods follow a one-third rule.
- Certificate of Conformity: required for regulated products, with food a listed category. We check whether your pulses are on the current list.
- Papers from India: a health certificate, plus an invoice and certificate of origin legalised by the Iraqi embassy with wet-ink signatures.
Packing, Marking and Routing
- Discharge is at Umm Qasr or Khor Al Zubair. Gulf routes are disrupted by the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, so we do not promise a transit time. Routing is confirmed with each quote.
